Mary E. McDonald


Mary E. McDonald, RN, MA is recognized nationally for her expertise in developing multiple-choice questions that assess critical thinking. She has more than twenty-five years of experience as a nurse educator at both the baccalaureate and associate degree levels. Mary earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Boston College and Masters degrees in both Nursing Education and Measurement in Applied Psychology from New York University.

Mary presents workshops across the country that focus on teaching nursing faculty to write critical thinking multiple-choice items. In addition, she has extensive experience developing standardized tests for nursing education and has developed and edited thousands of test questions.

Mary has authored a best selling textbook, which is now in its 4th edition. This text, The Nurse Educator’s Guide to Assessing Learning Outcomes, provides an extensive guide for nursing faculty in writing multiple-choice test questions. Mary was also the editor of the National League for Nursing: Review guide for RN pre-entrance exams.
